“We understand how patients may feel self-conscious about the appearance of their teeth. This is why we strongly believe in creating a strong, healthy, oral foundation. We do this to make sure that after your dental veneer treatment, not only will your teeth look great, but will remain healthy too.” – Dr. Manie Opperman

How do dental veneers work?

The treatment involves thin, bespoke plastic resin or porcelain shells being placed on the front of the teeth. Since they are made to measure, everything from the colour, shape and size can be made bespoke for you, so the end result will always be one that looks and feels completely natural.

A veneer can be used to restore one tooth, or multiple veneers can be used to create an entirely new smile that can last for up to 10 years if well taken care of. They are strong and are tailor-made to you so that you can eat and drink as normal without worrying about them becoming damaged.

Because the process of getting dental veneers is usually irreversible, we always carry out a thorough assessment and investigation to ensure veneers are the best treatment option for you. Your dentist will start by discussing your preferences with you, before taking a detailed look at your teeth and gums to determine whether veneers would be appropriate.

You will have the opportunity to ask any questions at this point, to ensure you’re completely confident and happy with the plans in place.

Composite Veneers Options

Composite Veneers are ideal for restoring aesthetics and functioning of teeth.

Veneers Bishops Stortford FAQ’s

Porcelain vs composite veneers – which are best?

At Hockerill Dental, we are proud to offer both porcelain and composite veneers. But the question is, which should you choose?

Porcelain veneers are composed of several thin layers of ceramic material that are fitted and bonded to your teeth to form a strong shell. These tend to be stronger, longer-lasting and better quality than their composite counterparts. The only downside is that they tend to be the most expensive option of the two.

Meanwhile, composite veneers are made from tooth-coloured resin, so can restore aesthetics, and cost a fraction of the price. Unlike porcelain, composites require minimal prep work – meaning your natural teeth don’t need reshaping to fit the veneer and the process can be completed in less time.

Although you might have an idea of which type you would like, it’s worth speaking with our specialists so we can advise you on the best treatment for your needs.

Why do people get veneers?

Veneers are the no.1 choice for many of our patients here at Hockerill Dental, usually because they want to transform their smiles.

Though one of the least invasive cosmetic dental treatments, dental veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth – great if you have discoloured, worn, misaligned, crooked teeth or gapped teeth. Made from either porcelain or composite resins, the custom-sculpted teeth-coloured shells fit over the top of your natural teeth.

Having provided veneers in Bishops Stortford for more than 60 years, we are confident that we can help to revitalise your smile with a customised treatment plan.

Are veneers painful?

If you’re considering cosmetic dentistry, you’re bound to have a number of questions, one of them being – do veneers hurt?

Let’s be clear. Patients are numb for the procedure so, once this takes effect, there should be no pain.

There is little to no pain after the numbness subsides for smaller cases (2-4 veneers). However, patients who are undergoing full mouth reconstructions (8 or more veneers) may experience some soreness in the gums – but this tends to pass within a matter of days as the mouth heals. This discomfort is usually mild and can be alleviated with over-the-counter medications from the pharmacy.

As one of Hertfordshire’s leading cosmetic dental clinics, we can assure you that our experienced team of dentists make the process as pain-free and comfortable as possible. We have been dealing with anxious patients for more than 60 years and offer a calming, professional approach to those seeking veneers in Bishops Stortford.

Is it true that veneers can last a lifetime?

Typically, they last 5-10 years. But with routine dental hygiene and regular visits to your dentist, veneers can last decades without breakages or discolouration!

Whilst there is no specialist aftercare or maintenance required, you will need to floss and brush twice a day. Yearly examinations and professional cleans every 6 months are also advisable.

Just like your natural teeth, dental veneers are prone to staining, so you want to avoid things like tea, coffee, red wine and fizzy drinks too.

To make your veneers last longer, you should:

  • Avoid grinding your teeth
  • Brush and floss regularly
  • Wear a mouthguard to play sport and/or at bedtime
  • Try not to eat hard foods (e.g. nuts, boiled sweets, etc.)
  • Never bite hard surfaces (remember your teeth aren’t tools!)

Can dental veneers ruin teeth?

No. This is a common misconception, however dental veneers work to do the opposite. They can enhance the look of the natural tooth, whilst protecting any previous exposure, giving you the confidence to eat, socialise and smile like you deserve.

How do I look after my new dental veneers?

When you opt for dental veneers with our talented team, you will come away with a clear understanding of how best to take care of them moving forwards. However, it is pretty straightforward and not too dissimilar from how you’d expect to maintain your natural teeth.

Regularly brushing, flossing and using mouthwash will help to ensure your smile stays healthy and looks great for the foreseeable.

Will veneers make my teeth look fake?

Absolutely not! When you come to us for dental veneers, we work hard to ensure the end result is as natural as can be. Veneers only serve as an enhancement to your natural tooth, so we will colour match your veneers and ensure the shape is perfect so that others won’t know what you’ve had done. The only thing you will know for sure is that your smile looks and feels fantastic!
